Tim Lapage
Tim was born in 1949 near the equator at Nakuru in Kenya, on the floor
of the Great Rift Valley - an area now famous for its lake which at certain
times of the year holds over 3 million flamingoes. Africa has changed a
lot since those colonial days but growing up close to Karen Blixen's house
in Karen, just outside Nairobi was certainly an interesting life. During
his childhood he was lucky to spend time traveling with his parents not
only around East Africa, but to South Africa, the Rhodesias, now Zambia
and Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
In 1971 after completing a business degree, he became a bush pilot,
flying throughout Kenya Uganda and Tanzania, and completed 4 journeys
to and from London in single engined Cessnas. Tim was privileged
to have spent time getting to know some of the legendary figures
of Kenya history such as George and Joy Adamson, creators of the
Born Free story, Beryl Markham, and Donald Kerr and Sid Downey,
founders of the legendary safari company.
In 1974 Tim went to fly for Gulf Air, national airline for the
Gulf States of Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Oman and Qatar. He was lucky
to find himself a captain of an L 1011 Tristar at the ripe old
age of 29! Whilst there he began a marketing business and met his
wife from the ranks of the airline! Being close to home Tim spent
most of his holidays at home in Kenya, helping his friends fly
their safari clients. In 1979 his passengers were Rhoda Ramsey
and her family - a well known realtor from Utah. They invited Tim
to visit them in Salt Lake City, Utah - three weeks later he was
there, and was soon equipped with a ski condo in Park City!
After the Gulf war in 1991, Tim decided upon a change of lifestyle
and came to Park City to live full time - but within a year he
was off back to Africa taking his first Safari Experts clients
from the U.S.A. He spends every year from June to September in Africa, hosting and flying his clients,
and keeping up to date with what is changing.
There are few who visit and know Africa as well as he does!
