Namibia relies heavily on diamonds and uranium to provide wealth for this
sparsely populated 515,000sq mile country - but the spectacular landscapes
and varied wildlife make Namibia a must see. A flying safari is the only
way to see a cross section of it in a reasonble amount of time. Sossusvlei
with its 1,000ft sand dunes, the Skeleton Coast where shipwrecks and whalebones
litter the shore, Swakopmund, Damaraland and the vast Etosha park should
all be seen. The Himba people, remote and rugged can be seen in the Northern
Kaokoland region. In its Northeastern region it enjoys its share of higher
rainfall river basin which offers excellent game viewing and tigerfishing,
with excellent small camps such as Impalila Island camp. Except here, and
the other game areas in Caprivi and Etosha, game viewing is considered a
bonus to the experiences of the freedom, beauty and solitude of this remarkable
area. The best time to visit Namibia is from May to September.
Highlights:
Dunes near Sossusvlei: These stunning dunes are the highest in the world
and their dramatic shapes and color best represent Namibia to the outside
world. It is a great thrill to hike into them. Amazingly some wildlife manages
to eke out an existence in this harsh environment.
Ongava Lodge Etosha Park: Etosha Park itself can seem comparatively crowded
for what is such a remote area, but ONgava is a private area adjoining the
park to the South. This twenty bed is built out of natural rock and thatch,
and there is a small 8 bed tented camp in a different area, ensuring exclusivity.
From here you can enjoy walks and night drive, and great concentrations
of game, including black rhino in neighbouring Etosha.
Gemsbok/Oryx on Namib dunes near Sossusvlei: Photographers come from all
over the world to try to catch such a classic sight as this, along with
that of the desert elephant in its incredibly harsh surroundings. The nearby
Sossusvlei wilderness camp sleeps 18 people in bungalows built onto the
side of the mountain, each with its own plunge pool, and is set on its own
14,000 acre property.
Skeleton Coast: Look at this new Wilderness camp located in the dunes on
the Skeleton coast! There are several excellent operators who can get you
far from the beaten track in this remarkable and remote country - and in
great comfort too!. A flying safari is a spectacular way to see all that
Namibia has to offer.
